Zero-emission back-up power for for data centers and critical infrastructure - scalable from 200kW to multiple megawatts
Collaborating to demonstrate the technical feasibility and customer benefits of hydrogen-powered fuel cell solutions, Vertiv has integrated Ballard fuel cell power modules with Vertiv™ Liebert® EXL S1 uninterruptible power system (UPS) within a successfully demonstrated proof of concept (POC) at Vertiv's facility in Ohio.
Ballard and Vertiv partner on zero-emission data center back-up power solutions
Vertiv’s Power Module H2 solution, demonstrated at their Delaware, Ohio facility, integrates two Ballard FCwave™-PowerGen 200kW fuel cell cabinets, which power the fully functional decarbonized back-up system. The solution encompasses a complete cooling sub-system, power conditioning equipment and hydrogen storage infrastructure integrated with Vertiv™ HPL Lithium-Ion batteries, Liebert® EXL S1 UPS system and the Vertiv™ DynaFlex Energy Management Controller.
During the collaborative effort, the teams were able to carry out initial validation and testing of the Power Module H2 solution with the objective to deliver a 100% reliable Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) with unrestricted hours of zero-emission back-up power - the challenge of a first-time integration of Ballard and Vertiv's “turn-key” fuel cell system solution on an industry-ready component level.
“The unprecedented adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) are driving a need for eco-friendly power solutions for our customers, with a focus on zero-carbon and low-carbon energy alternatives. The successful fuel cell proof-of-concept with Ballard provides a viable option for customers strengthening their data center sustainability strategy, and those moving to a future-ready Bring Your Own Power (BYOP) model.”
As a leading proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell supplier with a proven history within back-up power systems and large-scale systems for micro grid application, Ballard is already a recognized player in the industry and its technology solutions team has already developed, tested and delivered customized PEM fuel cell back-up power solutions. One of its latest projects is a fully functional fuel cell system including two FCwave™ fuel cell engines, along with supporting sub-systems, equipment and infrastructure.
The world’s leading critical infrastructure provider starts investigating the diversification of their power supply sub-systems as hydrogen fuel cells offer a reliable, emission-free and economic solution as an alternative to existing diesel-powered supply. During the collaborative effort, the teams were able to carry out initial validation and testing. In this industry-first application, Ballard and Vertiv have realized a fully integrated turn-key UPS fuel cell solution based on industry-ready component levels.
