Fuel Cell Electric Buses:

At Ballard Power Systems (Ballard), we believe that fuel cell electric buses will provide operators with an affordable direct replacement of diesel buses with no compromise to service and operation.

In this document, we explore the current major barriers to a wider adoption of fuel cell electric buses for transit authorities in the UK, the full scope of their benefits, bus capital and maintenance costs, along with hydrogen supply and fuelling infrastructure options for fuel cell bus fleets.

Some benefits offered by fuel cell electric buses:

• Affordability: superior cost of ownership vs. an all‐battery bus.
• Operability: the same convenience as a diesel bus but with longer operating range and fuel efficiency.
• Zero‐Emission Vehicles: quiet in operation and no toxic tailpipe exhaust emissions are produced (except for water vapour.)
